About Us
Welcome to Get it Dunne! My name is Sheila Dunne and I am hoping to make a difference in the lives of the children of Summit and the surrounding towns. The name Dunne has been synonymous with sports in Summit for over 40 years. Growing up in Summit and remaining there as a teacher and a coach for over 20 years, I felt the need to give back to the community I love and cherish. I am one of eight children and our daily routine as children included game play of some sort everyday. We made up our own games or played traditional games with other children from our neighborhood. We were competitive, imaginative, aggressive and skillful. Everyone was always welcome and a sense of community was instilled in me early.
As I entered junior high school, I was afforded the opportunity to compete on school teams and on recreation teams. It was at the very beginning of title IX, so the opportunities were there but limited. We had a physical education teacher and coach who inspired me and many others to excel and to go after our dreams. She taught the girls in the junior high and coached us in all sports and coached volleyball at the high school. Her gentle approach and never-ending encouragement guided me to become the best person I could be. I have tried to model my teaching and coaching in the same fashion that she had shown. Nancy Mueller was influential in the lives of many Summit girls and especially in mine.
As a physical education teacher and coach, I have been aware of the steady decline of self-confidence and the true love of games and play. It is imperative to empower our young children and teach them the nuances and skills of games that they can participate throughout their lives. As adults we take many of these skills for granted and consider many of them second nature. Many of our activities will incorporate physical and mental skills. Through their interactions with others, they will have the opportunity to practice being nice, compassionate, cooperative, collaborative, insightful and good listeners while having fun playing a game. Get It Dunne has been a dream of mine and I am so happy that my dream has come true. Games, sports, activities and problem-solving activities will all be a part of the plan, and the emotional and physical growth of every child are the true focuses.
Making a difference has always been very important to me. I know how I feel when I am praised and congratulated, and the expression on a child’s face when they have accomplished something that they weren’t sure they could do is priceless. Giving back to Summit and the surrounding communities is a life-long dream and it is exciting to see it come to fruition.
Come out and check us out! If there is a need for a sport or activity, please share that with us and we will try to accommodate the request.
